Greater Boston Flute Association Founders’ Statement:
A Message from Leone Buyse and Fenwick Smith
When we founded the Greater Boston Flute Association in 1992 our short-term goal was to provide a strong support group for the 1993 National Flute Association convention. Anyone who attended that convention remembers how successful it was, thanks largely to the efforts of many GBFA volunteers. Our long-term vision was to create a network of support and inspiration for flutists throughout New England, and through the years many people have worked diligently to provide those ideals for our membership. We offer our deep thanks to all who have served GBFA. In particular, we thank the indefatigable Ray Bartkowech for keeping GBFA alive and active through difficult times.
Just as life has cycles (and a definite beginning and an end), so do organizations. GBFA has been in transition during the past year. Recently we asked GBFA past president Judy Grant if she would be willing to carry on GBFA’s tradition of providing information, opportunity, and inspiration to flutists in the greater Boston area through her newly-founded Boston Flute Academy. Fortunately for us she has agreed, and will post information about upcoming flute events in the region free of charge on the BFA website. Judy has created an organization that focuses on younger players – the future of our profession. We find her concept very exciting, and see great benefit in a transition from GBFA to the Boston Flute Academy.
Thank you, Judy, and may the BFA thrive for many years to come!
